On the surface, this looks like nothing more than a devastating accident. But Max’s fingerprints — quite literally — are all over the final hours of Zoe’s life. He was, as far as anyone currently knows, the last person to see her alive. When Zoe caught him getting cosy with Linda, Max followed her upstairs, desperate to stop her from blabbing about their secret romance.
The trouble is, Zoe wasn’t in a state to be reasoned with. She was disorientated and struggling to stay upright — though Max, wrapped up in his own panic, simply assumed she’d had too much to drink. Rather than helping her, he turned around and walked straight back downstairs to Linda, leaving Zoe alone.
That decision could come back to haunt him. Linda knows Max was up there with Zoe that night, and if police ever get involved, his DNA is almost certainly going to turn up in that room. Given that Max is already rumoured to be in hot water with the law come New Year’s Day, this detail suddenly feels a lot less like background noise and a lot more like a ticking time bomb.
2. Was This Really Just a Tragic Accident?
The official story so far points to that head injury as the cause of death — a slow, silent bleed that no one caught in time. But something about the full picture still doesn’t quite add up.
Zoe did call 999 that night. Yet when the operator answered, she couldn’t get the words out to explain what was wrong. Was she trying to ask for medical help? Was she frightened of something — or someone? And crucially, is it possible that somebody else entered that room after Max walked away?
Some viewers have already floated a theory that’s sending shivers down the spine of the fandom: could Zoe’s own son, Josh, be connected to what happened next? It sounds unthinkable, but in Walford, the unthinkable has a habit of turning out to be true.
3. Will the Slaters Finally Come Home for Her Funeral?
If there’s one thing an EastEnders death is guaranteed to do, it’s drag the extended family back to Walford — and the tributes already pouring in suggest a Slater reunion could be on the cards.
Jean and Mo have already been lost in memories, swapping stories about the sisters and cousins who once filled the Slater house with noise and chaos. 4. Wait — Zoe Has a Twin Brother?
Buckle up, because this one takes us all the way back to EastEnders’ much-maligned (and largely forgotten) spin-off, Redwater. In that story, Kat and Alfie travelled to Ireland after a nun — played by the late June Whitfield — revealed a bombshell: Kat had a son she never knew about, and he was Zoe’s twin.
That son, originally named Luke, had grown up to become a priest known as Dermott. He also, rather inconveniently, turned out to be a murderer. It was a wild, soapy detour that most fans have quietly chosen to forget, and the show itself has more or less treated it as if it happened in some alternate universe, never mentioning it again.
But with Zoe now gone, could this long-buried thread finally get pulled back into the light? Might Dermott — Zoe’s own twin — make his way to Albert Square at last, drawn home by the one tragedy strong enough to bring him back?
5. Is Sean Slater’s Comeback Connected to Zoe’s Death?
While Dermott’s return is still speculation, one Slater comeback is already confirmed — and it’s a big one. Sean Slater, Jean’s son and Stacey’s brother, is heading back to Walford, and fans could not be more thrilled.
The timing is impossible to ignore. Is Sean’s homecoming tied directly to Zoe’s death, drawn back by grief and family duty? Or is there a separate storm brewing in his life in Brazil that’s forcing Walford’s original bad boy to finally come home?
