After three unforgettable years in Summer Bay, Jessica Redmayne has officially closed the book on Harper Matheson — and it’s fair to say her final scenes hit harder than most goodbyes the soap has ever given us.
Tonight’s episode marked the end of the road for Harper, who packed up her life alongside son Archie and sister Dana (Ally Harris) to escape the shadow of her abusive ex, Beau (Blake Richardson). Beau’s arrest may have brought a sense of justice, but for Harper, safety was never going to come from staying put. So, with tears in her eyes and a heavy heart, she said her final farewells to Tane (Ethan Browne) and the rest of the Bay before walking away for good.
It’s the kind of exit that doesn’t just tug at the heartstrings — it lingers. And according to Jessica herself, that was exactly the point.
A Storyline Rooted in Real Pain
Speaking candidly to TV WEEK, Jessica admitted the sudden nature of Harper’s departure took her by surprise, but she wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
“It’s, of course, sad to see Harper go — especially on terms like these — but I’m grateful as Jessica the actor to have experienced the immense challenge,” she shared. “I particularly love telling true stories and this one was very real and raw.”
That authenticity was no accident. Harper’s harrowing journey through a psychologically and physically abusive relationship wasn’t just dramatic television — it was a deliberate reflection of a crisis playing out in homes across Australia right now.
“This story is so devastatingly prevalent within our Australian communities as domestic violence in Australian families is at an all-time high,” Jessica explained. “It was certainly difficult to embody a woman who has found herself in a psychologically toxic and physically violent relationship that she can’t escape.”
The emotional toll didn’t stay confined to the screen, either. Jessica revealed the weight of the role often followed her home.
“Truthfully, it did leave me feeling uneasy as I left set each day,” she confessed. “But that is the job of an actor, as it is paramount that these stories get told in Australian homes in order to shed light on the true dangers Australian families are facing from domestic violence.”
It’s a powerful reminder of just how much responsibility soap stars carry when tackling issues this sensitive — and how far a well-told storyline can go in starting real conversations.
Three Years, Countless Memories
Jessica first stepped into Summer Bay back in 2023, and it didn’t take long for Harper to become a fan favourite. Her on-screen romance with Tane may not have gone the distance, but the pair remain close as they co-parent Archie — a dynamic that added real heart to the show.
Then there was her bond with Irene Roberts, played by the beloved Lynne McGranger, who took Harper and Dana in when they had nowhere else to turn. That friendship, Jessica says, mirrored real life just as much as it did on screen — and saying goodbye to Irene ranks among the most meaningful moments of her time on the show.
“Lynne chose to leave Home and Away with Alzheimer’s after being by my side when I lost my Mum,” Jessica said, reflecting on her own mother’s passing after a battle with the disease in 2023. “She said she wanted to spread awareness and what better way than through the telly into Aussie lounge rooms each night. I love Lynne and I owe her a lot for giving me that opportunity.”
Then there’s Ally Harris, who played on-screen sister Dana — and who, fittingly, exits Summer Bay alongside Jessica.
“I’m incredibly lucky to call Ally my on-screen sister. That girl is so talented, and she taught me a lot,” Jessica said. “She kept me calm and we became a wonderful support system for each other. I couldn’t have done it without her.”
Despite the emotional weight of it all, Jessica says her actual last day filming was surprisingly peaceful — a fitting way to close this chapter.
“Surprisingly calm!” she laughed, adding that it “felt like a warm book end to three great years.”
What’s Next for Jessica Redmayne?
Fans won’t have to wait long to see Jessica back in action. She’s currently treading the boards in a stage production of Steel Magnolias, sharing the spotlight with fellow Home and Away alumni Debra Lawrance and Belinda Giblin — proof that even away from the Bay, those on-screen bonds run deep.
Reflecting on her time on the show, Jessica summed it up simply: “Home and Away was a truly priceless experience as an actor and I’ve grown so much. I’ve definitely made friends for life.”
