Nicola Mitchell and Ned Hawkins appear to be hiding a deep-seated secret tied to unresolved family tension and underlying financial strain.
Although Jamie Bamber previously hinted at a friction-filled relationship between Ned and his sister-in-law, their on-screen interactions have appeared deceptively smooth—until now.
This hidden strain comes as Nicola faces overwhelming pressure. Her world has been upended in recent years following her son Harry’s tragic struggle with drug addiction, coupled with the traumatic premature birth of her daughter, Ivy. Behind their calm facade, Nicola’s mounting financial troubles and past hardships suggest a much darker connection with Ned that is finally beginning to surface.
Ex-husband Teddy (Roland Manookian) was also sent down for a murder that Harry committed, while youngest son Barney (Lewis Bridgeman) discovered that his real father is Zack Hudson (James Farrar).
Now, with her nightclub Harry’s Barn under threat, her family have banded together to try and save the establishment. They hoped that a party to celebrate Davinder “Nugget” Gulati’s (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury) would bring in the 25k needed to save the business, but it didn’t prove fruitful.
In today’s episode, Ned heard from Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) that his old associate – who had stole money from his therapist company – was still in the country. With Harry on his arm, Ned swanned down to Walford High Street to meet the man, Adam, and to demand the cash back.
He said that he had recordings of their previous sessions that he was prepared to share with Adam’s wife, Malandra, should he not comply.
Meanwhile, Rose Hawkins (Marian McLoughlin) interrupted Yolande Trueman’s (Angela Wynter) bible study class at the community centre to invite the attendees to a fundraiser for a cause very close her heart – a donkey sanctuary.
She stressed that the event was taking place at Harry’s Barn that evening, and the entry fee was £30.
Gemma Hawkins (Patricia Potter) was more honest, telling Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) and Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) that Nicola was in financial difficult and she hoped they’d come along and show their support.
When the event got underway, word soon spread that it wasn’t a charity fundraiser. Jodie Hawkins (Anna Constable) had told a series of lies, claiming that the night was in benefit of several fictional causes.
Just as everyone was about to leave, Nicola announced that she’d rather the Albert Square residents drink the house dry than the bailiffs take the profits. Then, in a shock twist, Ryder Hawkins (Felix Uff) brought in swathes of partygoers from a stag and hen do.
This would surely secure the future of Harry’s Barn.
But there was one big issue – Nicola was running out of booze, and she returned home with her tail between her legs. Ned was waiting for her, and brought the good news that he’d secured the funds to help her out.
She was happy, though clearly felt nervous about accepting his help. He reminded her that, for the last 20 years, they’d been keeping an almighty secret… and so there was no reason that their relationship had to change now.
